Students at Tokyo University of Foreign Studies (TUFS) must be fluent in either Japanese or English, but not necessarily in both. It, therefore, could be a good choice for both students who are excited about studying abroad but do not necessarily have the time for or interest in becoming proficient in the Japanese language, and students with advanced Japanese proficiency who are looking to use and refine their skills.
TUFS typically has a tremendous amount of funds available for researchers. According to their website, professors at TUFS have a 50+% chance of being approved for a research grant. If you are interested in being surrounded by current research in fields such as international relations or world cultures, TUFS may be an excellent choice for you.
TUFS is located right in the middle of big city Tokyo, reasonably close to many famous areas such as Akihabara’s “Electric Town,” Ginza’s shopping districts, and Harajuku’s fashion street (as well as cultural landmarks such as Meiji Shrine). So, it makes this school an ideal choice for those who want to delve deep into the heart of modern, metropolitan Japan.
