Kyoto University 京都大学

  • Kyoto, Japan 京都府

Kyoto University has several interesting and unique programs for international students. Students can enroll in Kyoto University’s regular undergraduate or graduate programs, some of which are taught in English and some in Japanese. Undergraduate students can also enroll in iUp, which has no Japanese language proficiency requirements and involves a 6-month preparatory period of pre-foundation classes and intensive Japanese language classes. There is also the Liberal Arts and Sciences to Learn in English program, which is geared for non-native-English-speakers who wish to improve and hone their English through taking specially designed courses taught in English.

Kyoto is one of Japan’s most famous and culturally important regions. In fact, during World War II, the Allies intentionally left Kyoto relatively undamaged out of respect for its cultural value. Students studying in Kyoto can visit districts that are remarkably unchanged from how they were hundreds of years ago, and pay their respects at ancient shrines, temples, and castles. You may even happen upon a Geisha or Maiko walking along the same street as you! Kyoto is also home to many modern cultural institutions, such as the Manga Museum and the Toei Movie Village, and is within easy visiting distance of popular natural attractions such as mountainous Arashiyama or Lake Biwa.
